When the same QSC-related questions keep showing up in search logs, I feel like I owe the internet a clear answer. Not a "both are great, it depends" answer. A real answer. Here are four comparisons that matter to your budget, with the verdicts I've landed on after years of invoices.

FRFR speaker vs PA speaker: the modeller-speaker myth

FRFR stands for full range, flat response. The idea is that a modeler's cabinet simulation should be heard through a speaker that adds no color. PA speakers are also designed to be full range and reasonably flat, but they're usually voiced with a bit of presence to cut through a mix. That difference matters more than the spec sheets suggest.

Last year I tested a Helix through a QSC CP12 and through a dedicated FRFR wedge. I expected the FRFR to win because that's what every forum told me. It didn't. The CP12 sounded more alive in the mids, which is exactly what you want when you're competing with a loud drummer. The FRFR wedge sounded polite. And polite is not a compliment on stage.

So why does a dedicated FRFR often cost more and deliver less in live settings? Partly because "FRFR" is more of a marketing promise than a standard. In a studio, flat response is a reference. In a club, a slightly voiced speaker is your friend.

Here's the first verdict: for a gigging guitarist, a PA speaker like the QSC CP12 or K12.2 will beat a dedicated FRFR speaker in almost every way that matters. Before you send angry comments: yes, there's a niche—multi-position rigs, identical tonal behavior, serious studio monitoring. But those do not describe most people asking this question.

QSC RMX 1450 vs PLX 3002: where the weight hits your budget

The RMX 1450 is the old standard: heavy, analog, built like a tank. The PLX 3002 is the newer-style amp: lighter, more efficient, and much more expensive on the used market. As of January 2025, I've seen PLX 3002 units asking $700–$900 in good condition. Used RMX 1450s generally run $300–$450. If you only compare upfront costs, the RMX wins. But I don't sign checks based on upfront costs alone.

We bought two used RMX 1450s in 2022. In 2024, one started humming loudly—the kind of hum that makes the band look at the amp rather than their instruments. Repair quote: $180, plus a week of downtime while we used a backup. That's roughly half of what we paid for the amp. Not exactly a bargain.

The PLX 3002 also weighs about 20 pounds less. If you've ever loaded out at 1 a.m., you don't need me to explain why that matters. Last summer, one of our backline techs strained his shoulder moving a rack with two RMX amps. That's not an equipment expense on any invoice, but it affected our callouts and payroll.

Second verdict: if your amps live in a fixed rack and never move, the RMX 1450 is acceptable value. If they travel, the PLX 3002 is cheaper in total cost of ownership. Your back—and your crew's backs—are part of the calculation.

Stage monitor box: don't point a PA speaker at someone's knees

I've used a regular 12-inch PA speaker lying on its side as a stage monitor. It kind of worked. The singer could hear the vocals. But after 20 minutes, he kept asking for more volume. The more level we gave him, the worse the feedback got. Classic trap.

A dedicated stage monitor box is angled so the sound hits the performer's ears, not their chest. That small detail means the performer needs less level, which means less stage wash and fewer feedback problems. By "sound-check time saved," a real wedge wins every time.

That said, a compact QSC CP8 with a floor mount can pass as a monitor for acoustic gigs. Honestly, it's fine for that. But for a loud band, buy a real wedge. The lead singer's "can you turn it up?" requests will drop dramatically.

Third verdict: buying a proper stage monitor box is not audio snobbery. It's cost control, because every minute lost to bad monitor sound is a minute you pay for in overtime or client dissatisfaction.

Coax to subwoofer: two different worlds, one bad cable

In home theater, the subwoofer output on an AV receiver is an RCA connection, and that RCA cable is internally a coaxial cable. A 75-ohm coax/RCA cable is the right tool there, and keeping it away from power cables is smart practice. If that's your setup, you're doing it right.

In professional audio—especially with QSC powered subs like the KS series—the inputs are XLR. The right cable is a balanced XLR cable. An RCA-to-XLR adapter might work if the source is unbalanced, but it also introduces grounding and hum problems you don't want.

The most frustrating part of subwoofer troubleshooting? The "my sub isn't working" call that turns out to be a damaged or wrong cable. You'd think a cable is a cable, but it isn't. I once pulled a 20-foot "RCA subwoofer cable" out of a pro rack that was clearly an old video surveillance cable. It worked, with a hum that would not quit.

If you absolutely need to convert a line-level RCA output to XLR, use a proper DI box. A homemade cable solution produced exactly the kind of noise floor that made our engineer ask if we knew what we were doing. Not a proud moment.

Fourth verdict: know which world you're in. Home theater: 75-ohm RCA/coax. Pro audio: XLR. And when in doubt, replace the cable before you replace the subwoofer.

So, what should you actually buy?

Here's the practical answer:

Gigging guitarist with a modeler: get a QSC CP12 or a used K12.2 instead of a dedicated FRFR. Better stage presence, more flexibility, and usually a better price.

Fixed installation needing power: a used RMX 1450 is hard to beat. Just set aside a little money for a capacitor repair down the road.

Mobile or touring production: pay the premium for a PLX 3002. After one load-out with the older amp, you'll understand.

Stage monitors: get a real wedge if you're running a loud band. The CP8 with a floor mount is a passable compromise for quiet gigs, but know what you're buying.

Subwoofer connection: use the proper cable for your gear. XLR for professional subs, 75-ohm coax/RCA for home theater. If you're getting hum, check the cable first. It's the cheapest fix in every sense.

Look, I'm not opposed to saving money. My job is to save money. But I've learned that when you save on the wrong side of the equation, the hidden cost almost always exceeds the savings. A blown voice coil, a bad monitor mix, a back injury—each one costs more than the money you saved on the gear. And the client who hears that blown voice coil at a corporate event won't remember the model number. They'll just remember that it sounded bad. That's your brand.

QSC gear has been reliable for us, and I'll keep buying it. But the choices you make within that lineup determine whether you're getting real value or just a lower upfront invoice. Do the math the right way, and the verdicts get clear fast.
