Powered Speakers and Subwoofers: A QSC Buyer's 5-Step Checklist

If you've ever ordered a powered speaker for an office event and ended up with something that doesn't fit the cart, the mount, or the budget, you know the feeling. This checklist is for people like me—administrative buyers who get asked to source PA gear, subwoofers, and amplifiers for meeting rooms, town halls, and small venues. I manage AV and facilities purchasing for a 300-person company, roughly $40,000 a year across eight vendors, and I report to both operations and finance. It's not a guide for touring engineers. It's the process I've used since 2020, after a few expensive surprises. There are five checks, and I do them in the same order every time.

The 5 Checks

  1. Confirm the exact model before you search for specs.
    Purchase requests cross my desk with “QSC K12” written on them when the amplifier module says “K12.2,” and “KC12” when the cabinet is actually a KS112 subwoofer. If someone asks you for the “QSC KC12 subwoofer weight,” the first step is to look at the product label. In QSC's current K family, the 12-inch full-range powered speaker is the K12.2, and the 12-inch powered subwoofer is the KS112. They are different cabinets with different weights. The K12.2's published spec sheet lists it at 44.1 lb (qsc.com, accessed March 30, 2025); the KS112 is in that same ballpark, but “ballpark” is not a spec. Pull the official PDF for the model you actually have before you design a cart or order a flight case.
  2. Treat “used QSC K12 powered speaker” as a condition, not a category.
    A used QSC K12 powered speaker can be a no-brainer if it has a clean history. But I learned to ask who used it and how. When I compared two used K12 listings side by side in 2024, one had been pushed hard in a bar; the other came from a church that upgraded to the K.2 series. Same price, similar cosmetics. Plus, the church unit had far less wear on the amplifier module. The question everyone asks is “How many hours are on the speaker?” The question they should ask is “What kind of environment did it live in?” Ask for photos of the amp module and the rear panel, not just the grille.
  3. Buy a good power amplifier for the speaker you have, not the one you're imagining.
    A good power amplifier is a match: enough continuous output to give the speaker headroom, and the right input sensitivity for your mixer. It's tempting to think you can just compare wattage numbers. But wattage without impedance, sensitivity, and program power is almost meaningless. For a small installed system, a QSC GX-series amp is a solid workhorse. For a larger project with Dante or network control, the CX-Q series does more in less rack space. The execution has changed—Class-D amps run cooler, weigh less, and are easier to deploy—but the fundamentals haven't. And when someone suggests an Edison PA speaker for a breakroom or a basic presentation room, that can be a legitimate choice. Match the amp to that speaker's continuous rating, not the “program” number on the marketing sheet. If the amplifier can't meet the speaker's impedance and continuous load, that's the red flag.
  4. Check the physical path: weight, rigging, power draw, and connectivity.
    Most buyers focus on wattage and completely miss weight. I get it—spec sheets don't tell you who's going to carry the box. A 12-inch powered subwoofer usually lands in the mid-40s, while an 18-inch sub can hit 80 lb or more. That changes your cart, your truck, and your mounting hardware. The KEF Kube 10 MIE powered subwoofer, by contrast, is a compact home/office sub that works well in a conference room. I almost rejected it because it “only” had a 10-inch driver. Then I measured the room and realized the smaller sub made more sense—and it was far more practical to move around. Check XLR, TRS, and network connectors, plus cable lengths and whether the product has user-replaceable parts, before you commit.
  5. Make warranty and service part of the price.
    A good price means nothing if the support path is broken. In 2023, a vendor who couldn't provide proper invoicing—handwritten receipt only—cost me $2,400 in rejected expenses. Now I verify invoicing and service capability before placing any order. When I compared two subwoofer options, the numbers said go with the cheaper vendor by a solid margin. My gut said their slow replies were a warning. I went with the other vendor. Six months later, the cheaper one discontinued the model I needed. Every cost analysis pointed to the budget option; my gut saved me a support headache.

Bottom line
Before you order, know the exact model, the published spec sheet, the physical weight, the amp match, and the service path. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025—especially with Class-D amps and DSP—but the fundamentals haven't changed. Trust me on this one: the five minutes you spend checking these details beats the five hours you'll spend returning the wrong speaker.

One more thing: don't let “new vs used” override everything. A used K12 with a clean amp module and a transferable warranty is a better buy than a new unit from a vendor who can't answer a phone call. And if a deal feels too good to be true, get it in writing. Then get the serial number.
