What makes the QSC KS118 subwoofer different from other single-18 subs?

The KS118 is QSC's powered single-18, and from the outside it looks like any other sub. The reality is the onboard DSP does a lot more work than people expect. The acoustic act was thrilled; the DJ portion lacked punch. In hindsight, I should've pushed the CP12. The K8.2 gives you more headroom and a tougher build, but it's heavier and pricier. What should I check before buying a loudspeaker pole?

Most clients assume a loudspeaker pole is a universal accessory. It's not. I've tested six different poles, and these are the details that make or break a gig:

  • Thread standard: M20 threaded poles fit most subs like the KS118. 35mm poles fit standard top-speaker cups like the ones on the CP8 or K12.2. Get the mismatch wrong and you're improvising on site.
  • Weight rating: A cheap pole rated for 50 lbs will fail with a 70-lb speaker on top. A pole collapsed at a festival in 2023 and put a $1,500 speaker on the ground. That one was on me—I'd decided to keep using the cheap poles. Now we replace poles on a regular schedule. That policy came directly from that failure.
  • Height range: If the pole only reaches 3 feet, the speaker fires at the back wall of most rooms. For seated audiences, you want 4 to 4.5 feet to clear the front rows.

Also check whether the locking pin is metal. Plastic pins wear out fast. (Not that I've snapped one mid-show. Wait, I have. In 2022. The speaker tilted forward during a keynote, which was an interesting conversation with the client.)

Why would I need a Bluetooth transmitter for an audio mixer?

This comes up every time a client buys a compact digital mixer. Most current mixers have Bluetooth reception built in—they can receive audio from a phone or laptop. But some boards use Bluetooth only for app control, not for audio streaming. If that's your situation, you've got two paths:

  • A Bluetooth receiver into a channel line input is the cheapest and simplest way to stream music from a phone.
  • A Bluetooth transmitter sends audio from the mixer to wireless headphones, assistive-listening receivers, or Bluetooth-powered speakers.

Honestly, I've never fully understood why Bluetooth transmitters are marketed so heavily to mixer owners. My best guess is that people confuse them with receivers. In practice, I only use a transmitter for rehearsals—cueing from wireless headphones—or for a hearing-assist feed. If you just want to play backing tracks, buy a $30 receiver and plug it into an empty channel. Also flagging this: Bluetooth adds roughly 30–100 ms of latency depending on codec. For critical monitoring, that delay is a dealbreaker. For intermission music, it's fine.

Last week a client was about to drop $120 on a transmitter. I pointed them to a $40 receiver and they were in business that afternoon.

What does loudspeaker industry research actually tell us about where things are heading?

I'm not a market analyst, so I can't quote you growth numbers with confidence. But I read the industry research when it crosses my desk, and I see the same trends from the rental side. Three things actually matter:

First, DSP and networking are filtering down to mid-tier price points. A powered speaker at $500 today has EQ, delay, and presets that would've cost five times as much a decade ago. Which QSC series makes sense for a new rental company?

I get this question weekly from people starting a rental side-hustle. My honest recommendation: start with two KS118 subs, two K12.2 tops, and a TouchMix-8 or TouchMix-16. That covers 200–300 people for receptions, panels, and small corporate events. Add CP8s as monitors or fills and you've got a full inventory.

Why not start with CP series as mains? Because rental clients push equipment hard. The K.2 series has more headroom, better build quality, and front-panel DSP that lets you fix problems while the event is running. When a client walks up mid-event and asks for more low end—and they will ask—you want to twist a knob, not open a laptop.

One last thing I tell every client: buy the best subwoofer you can afford. Tops matter, but the sub is what sells the system. The KS118 costs more upfront, but it's one of the few subs I've seen handle years of loading, rigging, and rain delays without losing tuning consistency. That's worth the premium.
