If you're researching QSC — whether it's a RMX4050HD power amplifier for a touring rig, a pair of K12.2 active speakers for a corporate event space, or a full line array for a house of worship — you've probably noticed the same thing I did when I started managing audio equipment procurement: everyone has a different opinion.
Some say 'buy the biggest amp you can afford.' Others swear by 'match everything to the speaker's RMS rating.' A few old-timers will tell you 'just get the powered speakers and be done with it.'
The problem? They're all right — for their specific situation.
Over the past 6 years, I've managed a cumulative audio equipment budget of roughly $180,000. I've negotiated with 12+ vendors, documented every order in our cost tracking system, and learned the hard way that the 'best' choice depends entirely on three things: your venue, your staff, and your timeline. In my opinion, that's the only honest way to approach this.
I'm not 100% sure this framework will apply to every single setup, but it's worked for us across 8 different installations. Here's what I've learned.
Scenario A: The Fixed Installation — 'Set It and Forget It' (House of Worship, Corporate AV, Education)
From the outside, a fixed installation looks simple: you buy the equipment, install it once, and it runs for years. The reality is that fixed installations are the most demanding in terms of setup accuracy because you don't get a second chance without significant labor costs.
When I audited our 2023 spending, I found that 40% of our 'budget overruns' in AV projects came from one cause: mismatched amplifier and speaker gain structure. We'd install a system, it would sound fine for a week, then someone would complain about distortion. We'd send a tech out. Twice. Then we'd swap an amplifier.
For fixed installations, I'd recommend this approach:
- Prioritize DSP integration. If you're using QSC speakers, look at the SPA4-100 or CX-Q series amplifiers with built-in DSP. - Who sets up and operates this system? If it's a dedicated audio engineer (or a team), you can handle passive systems and complex DSP. If it's volunteers or part-time staff, go active with as few components as possible. The K12.2 is the classic recommendation here for a reason — it's almost impossible to set up wrong.
- How often does the system get moved? More than once a week? You're in Scenario B. Once a month? Scenario C. Once a year or less? Scenario A. This single question determines whether weight and portability (powered speakers) or cost and customizability (passive + amplifier) make more sense.
- What's your tolerance for failure? If a system failure means a cancelled show and lost revenue, you need redundancy. If it means a Sunday service runs without bass for one week, you can go lean.
This was true 10 years ago when active speakers were limited and unreliable. Today, QSC's powered lineup (K.2 series, CP series, KW series) has largely closed that gap. A powered system is no longer a compromise — it's often the smart choice.
In my opinion, the most important thing is to document your decision. I built a cost calculator after getting burned on hidden fees twice. Now I run every quote through it. It takes 15 minutes.
