Dimension 4: Sound consistency and hidden processing costs

Here's where I made my own expensive assumption. I assumed that a QSC small passive speaker and a QSC active speaker with the same driver size would sound basically the same. I didn't verify. It turned out the active model had DSP presets and limiters that the passive model didn't have by itself. A siren loudspeaker is an alerting device, usually horn-loaded, made to project voice or alarm tones over a wide area. It is not designed for music. And a car subwoofer is not the same as a QSC small speaker or a powered PA speaker. Car audio drivers are designed for 12V electrical systems, specific enclosure volumes, and low-impedance amplifiers. A pro audio speaker is designed for AC power and balanced line-level inputs. Unless you're building a custom mobile setup with an inverter and proper crossover, don't mix the categories.

So which should you choose?

Here's my scenario-based answer, and it has nothing to do with which category is better in some absolute sense.

  • For rental houses, bands, AV companies, or any room that changes use: choose QSC active speakers. They're the fastest to deploy and the easiest to repurpose.
  • For permanent installs with multiple rooms and a central amp room: choose QSC small passive speakers. Sharing amplifier channels and centralized maintenance usually gives a better long-term cost.
  • For an emergency replacement tomorrow: choose the active QSC speaker if you can get power and a signal source. If the failed speaker is passive and you have a spare amp channel plus an identical speaker, the passive swap can be faster.

I don't want this to sound like I'm dodging the answer. The pattern I see after years of rush orders is simple: the lowest unit price often becomes the highest total cost. When I compare QSC small speakers and QSC active speakers, I'm not looking for which is cheaper on paper. I'm looking for which one I can install, commission, and support without burning the project.
