The Surface Problem: It Didn't Sound Broken, It Sounded Hollow
In January 2022, my small install crew landed a contract for a 150-seat black box theater. The budget allowed for powered tops, a matching sub, and proper cabling. Everything sounded okay—or rather, it sounded okay when no one was pushing the system. In real performance, the low end was lumpy. The vocals didn't cut the way they had in the demo room. The client paid $11,200 (maybe $11,400, I'd have to check the invoice) expecting something that made the room feel alive. Instead, the system felt like it was hiding behind a curtain.

The Real Problem: I Bought Specs, Not a System
Here's what I didn't want to admit at the time: I had fallen for peak wattage.
The QSC 18'' subwoofer 3600W rating is a peak number. Peak numbers are useful for marketing and for telling a rental client that a system has safety headroom. They're not useful for comparing how two subwoofers will feel next to each other. The continuous rating—so unglamorous, so small—is the number that actually drives the sound. Why does that matter? Because every time you push the sub past its continuous window, it wastes power as heat and the drivers lose control.
Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), amplifier output claims need to be truthful and substantiated. The '3600W' can be substantiated. But it doesn't mean the subwoofer will deliver 3600W all day. A 3600W peak sub can still compress, strain, and lose phase coherence when I push it hard. Same with plenty of Italian loudspeaker brands, by the way—I'm not singling out one manufacturer.
I had also assumed that because the tops and sub were from the same product family, the DSP would just work. It didn't. I never checked whether the sub's polarity was reversed relative to the tops. I didn't measure the distance between the sub stack and the flown tops before tuning. I assumed 'system' meant 'same brand.' It actually means 'coherently aligned and tuned together.'
That's the deeper issue. I was shopping for boxes, not for system integration. The unit price was my priority. Someone on a forum even said an XPA-2 Gen3 2 channel audiophile power amplifier would fix the harshness. It wouldn't have. The problem was not amplification. It was phase, alignment, and settings.
The iLoud subwoofer had a cameo too. A studio friend suggested adding an iLoud subwoofer to the control room where we did final tuning. I almost bought one because it was cheap—not because it could do the job. The iLoud subwoofer is a fine nearfield tool for a producer desk. It is not a PA subwoofer. I was confusing 'small and affordable' with 'right for the application.'
Why the Spec Sheet Lies to Everyone
Honestly, I'm not sure why unit-price thinking feels so rational in the moment. My best guess is that peak wattage is an easier number to sell to a client than phase coherence. A client doesn't call and ask how many milliseconds of latency your subwoofer has. They ask if it's 3600W. So we buy 3600W and forget that watts don't tune a room.
The Cost of Getting It Wrong
This mistake cost more than the gear. We spent three extra days on site, two of them unpaid because the contract fixed the install date. That punch in the budget was about $2,100. The client didn't cancel, but their next sound system quote went to another vendor.
I also lost confidence from my own crew. Our best monitor engineer was the one who finally said, 'The sub is last in the signal chain. Why are the tops 8 feet away?' That one question exposed the real problem: I had placed the system components before I understood how they would interact. The distance difference created a comb-filtering effect that made the entire system sound thin.
We didn't have a formal verification process for phase and spacing. Cost us two days and the credibility of the whole install. A simple polarity check would have caught it. A test tone and a tape measure would have caught the spacing issue.
I can only speak to my own context—mid-size installs, predictable schedules, permanent venues. If you're a touring company with a different setup every day, the details will be different. But the principle is the same: don't make a $12,000 decision based on a $200 price difference and a marketing number.
What I Would Do Differently (and What We Do Now)
This isn't a long troubleshooting guide. It's the short version of the checklist I now use before any quote goes out.
- Read the continuous power spec, not just the peak number. The QSC 18'' subwoofer 3600W system is capable; the question is what it can do continuously when driven at the levels your venue needs.
- Buy tops and subs from one ecosystem with DSP presets designed for each other. Mixing brands can work, but only if you have time to measure and align. We often don't.
- Check polarity and physical spacing before you tune. Distance differences between sub and top are the number-one reason a good system sounds empty.
- Decide based on service access and total installed cost. If you can't get a replacement driver in under two weeks, the cheap price isn't actually cheap.
