Use this when you're buying or customizing a small pro audio system: amps, passive loudspeakers, a powered subwoofer, maybe some 70V pendant speakers. It's built for the math that actually happens before an order goes out. There are 6 steps. Do them in order.
Step 1: Match the amp's continuous power to the speaker's program rating
It's tempting to think watts are watts. They're not.
A speaker has three power numbers: continuous (AES), program, and peak. The one that matters for amp selection is program, or roughly 2x continuous. If a speaker is rated 300W continuous and 600W program, you want an amp that puts out around 600W per channel at the speaker's nominal impedance. A QSC audio amplifier like the GX5 gets recommended a lot because it's built to do this without breaking a sweat. But the important part isn't the brand; it's that the amp can deliver that number continuously, not only on a peak test tone.
According to the FTC's amplifier rule (16 CFR Part 432, ftc.gov), amplifier power claims in home entertainment are supposed to be based on continuous output with a stated distortion level. For commercial install, the same logic applies. If a spec sheet only says peak 1200W, that's a red flag. It's not a real power figure.
Step 2: Check impedance mode before you order the amp
I once ordered the right amp with the wrong input sensitivity. Actually, that's a later step. This one is about impedance.
If you're using QSC pendant speakers on a 70V/100V line, figure out the tap settings first. A pendant speaker with a 30W tap, six of those, is 180W. Add a couple 15W taps and you're at 210W. Then choose an amp with enough 70V output. It sounds simple, but I've seen more than one order screw this up because someone tapped every speaker at a high wattage just to make it louder.
Also, if you're mixing 70V and 8-ohm zones on the same amp, make sure the amp supports mixed loads. Some do, some don't. This is a check before you order step because once it's on the truck, it's not a no-brainer to send back.
Step 3: Set the crossover before you connect your sub
For studios and smaller rooms, the KRK10s subwoofer is one of those products people buy to add low end to a pair of main monitors. But it won't fix a system that isn't crossed over properly.
The KRK10s subwoofer has its own variable crossover and phase switch. That's great for a 2.1 setup. But if you're also sending full-range to the mains, you're going to get cancellation in the upper bass. The correct approach: high-pass the mains at about 80Hz, low-pass the sub around 75-80Hz, then adjust phase while playing a sine wave around the crossover point. Yes, this requires an RTA or your ears. Yes, it takes 10 minutes. Missing that step made a $3,200 install sound worse than the old $500 desktop speakers.
Step 4: Count the cost of a blown driver, not just the price of an amp
My view on budget gear: I'm not against it. I'm against budget logic that ignores what happens after the amp clips.
In September 2022, I bought 12 budget-friendly amps to save $100 per unit. The first one overheated on a 4-hour rehearsal. Then another. Make that four units total. By the time I replaced them, paid for service calls, and lost a day of labor, the $1,200 savings had turned into about $3,500. I kept second-guessing the replacement order for weeks. I didn't relax until the new amps ran two full days without a fault.
A reputable QSC audio amplifier costs more up-front. It also has protection, stable output at low impedance, and honest continuous power ratings. That's not a marketing speech; that's total cost of ownership. When you compare quotes, add in the cost of a blown driver, one extra truck roll, and the meeting where you explain to a client why the PA keeps shutting down. The cheapest option rarely looks cheap after that.
Step 5: Verify replacement driver specs, not just the 10-inch basket
If you're repairing a cabinet and decide to replace the midrange, it's tempting to search for any 10-inch driver at 8 ohms. That was my mistake in 2019. I bought a cheap midrange because the price was right. It fit physically. It sounded nasal. It ruined the system for three weeks before I admitted it.
If you're specing a replacement, a driver like the PRV Audio 10MR650A 10" midrange loudspeaker is worth checking against the original. Don't just look at impedance and sensitivity. Check Fs, Qts, Vas, Xmax, and recommended enclosure volume. A 4dB sensitivity difference can change the balance between midrange and tweeter. The box is a filter; every driver that goes in has to interact with the same box and crossover.
I have mixed feelings about aftermarket drivers. On one hand, they're cheaper and easier to get. On the other hand, you're guessing if the manufacturer didn't publish the T/S parameters. My rule now: if the T/S specs aren't on the datasheet, it's a deal-breaker.
Step 6: Write down the gain structure (yes, really)
This is the step people hate, but it's the one that saves the most later.
When a system has a QSC audio amplifier for the main PA and a Hegel power amplifier for a separate zone, the two amps often have different input sensitivities. A Hegel power amplifier might be rated for 1V input for full output, while an install amp needs 1.4V or more. If you set them the same, one zone will be significantly louder. Same problem happened when we integrated a premium hi-fi amp into a restaurant background music system. The solution wasn't a better amp; it was setting input attenuators and noting the gain values.
After you set the crossover, limiter, main volume, and sub phase, take 60 seconds and write it down. Include amp gain settings, DSP preset names, and which speakers are on which channel. I hate doing this. Part of me feels like it's unnecessary. But after the third service callback in Q1 2024, we now make documentation part of the checklist. One note can turn a 90-minute debugging session into a 10-minute fix.
Final warnings and a few red flags
- If a datasheet doesn't show continuous power at a stated distortion, it's not enough to buy from.
- If the pendant speaker tap sum is over 90% of the 70V amp's power, redo the calculation.
- If the subwoofer phase switch is set wrong, no amount of EQ will fix the null.
- If the replacement driver has no T/S parameters, you're gambling with the crossover.
- If you're about to buy the cheapest amp just because it's $200 less, reread Step 4.
Bottom line: The equipment isn't the point. The execution is. That's why a system with simple choices and a documented setup plan can outperform a rack full of great specs that were never tuned. Start with a reliable amplifier that matches your speakers, set the crossover correctly, verify replacement drivers, and write it down. Then the investment stays an investment rather than a line item labeled do over.
